David Karásek and Michael Tomalik present a versatile piece of urban furniture that lands gracefully over various types of urban furnishings, providing an alternative to standard umbrellas with a central leg.
Its stable steel structure eliminates problems related to inclement weather or vandalism.
For its design philosophy, the UFO shelter has won a 2024 Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and Global Design News.
The UFO Shelter features a circular canopy that appears to hover above a wooden platform, creating a daybed-like area for relaxation.
It can be installed in parks, promenades, and semi-public areas in almost any country without the need for daily maintenance.
Complemented by a levitating circular platform, The UFO provides a space for peaceful and undisturbed rest.
Galvanised and powder coated steel structure.
A PVC coated polyester fabric roof, stainless steel tensioning mechanism with laminate rods. Steel frame with wooden slats on the daybed version.
According to its designer Michael Tomalik, the UFO Shelter aims to shift perceptions of public spaces by providing aesthetically pleasing and functional elements that cater to daily human needs, such as relaxation and social interaction.
