Designer Marshall Wollum and Kodama Designs present Kodama Bar Stool, a blend of ancient techniques with modern technology to create a piece that will hopefully endure for generations, in both construction and design aesthetic.

The design of the Kodama Bar Stool has been awarded a 2020 Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The word Kodama translates to the “spirit of the tree.” The intent behind the Kodama Bar Stool is to pay tribute to wood, one of our world’s most renewable materials, and to honor the tree that granted us its life’s work.

The goal of this project was to combine the knowledge of traditional woodworking with a CNC router to accomplish joinery that was previously unobtainable in complexity and precision.
The challenge lies within the programming of the powerful tool to delicately manifest the design.
There is vision and artistry within the code and manufacturing process.
This innovative process has many more exciting years of refinement ahead as we are just beginning to open the door to a new era that will allow human creativity to flourish with new capabilities.
The contrasting walnut and applewood highlight the stool’s creative and original wood joinery.
