Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Located in the central and popular neighborhood of Foners, in Palma de Mallorca, the plot of the new residential building raised by Gonzalo Pardo and his design team at gon architects is characterized by its privileged corner location and its small, angular polygonal geometry.
With the aim of obtaining the maximum number of homes possible in the building volume, a compact organization system is proposed that works through the arrangement of walls parallel to the facades, separated from them by 4.5 and 6 meters, depending on the orientation, with a patio that works with a thermal draft that allows ventilation of all common areas.
The result is 10 homes, all the same, and different at the same time, that share four advanced concepts that seek to break with the traditional idea of domestic space
The kitchen is the protagonist of the house.
For a long time, the space-time destined for the production of food was banished to the darkest corner and away from the house.
This project seeks to recover a central position of this place, where the act of cooking is made visible, allowing not only the incorporation of other users in this activity but also the relationship with all the members of the coexistence group.
Spatial flexibility as project material.
Faced with the idea of designing homes with spaces that do not take into account the passage of time and the changes in the lives of its inhabitants, a sliding door system is proposed that allows the space to be reconfigured whenever desired and needed.
The atomized bathroom.
If traditionally a bathroom enclosed all the pieces (washbasin, shower, toilet) within its four walls, making its use incompatible between people with different schedules.
It is committed to a space for the care and tuning of the body where each of its elements is separated, favoring its use by different people at the same time, while generating a meeting place.
The concept of a nameless room is present.
Rarely any of the rooms in the domestic space lacks a pre-established program.
It is proposed to leave the house unfinished and think of empty spaces that the user himself defines over time, as is the case of the room located at the entrance to the house: it can be a library, a guest room, or just a hall.
