“Our projects are humanly designed, politically engaged, financially viable, and structurally realistic,” states Julien De Smedt.

Leave it to an architect to create a shelving system that’s as versatile as building blocks.
Designed by Julien De Smedt of the Danish firm JDS Architects, the new Stacked Storage System for Muuto demonstrates how furniture can be configured and re-configured with the ebb and flow of life, offering new ways of stretching the modular system to its furthest capacities.
Being both versatile and functional, the modular’s configuration is never final and can always be rearranged or enriched with more modules.

The whimsical and highly versatile design can be arranged and rearranged time and time again to the exact spatial and aesthetic needs of its user.
Though having a simplistic character, the design fulfills an array of purposes at once from entire shelving setups over sideboards to bookcases and side tables.
One can choose from modules that are open or have backboards or doors on their front.
Modules can be placed directly on the floor or on a Stacked podium.
The design can easily be refreshed by playing around with the space between the modules or mounting the modules with a backboard directly onto the wall.

One can mix and match various colors and sizes of the storage system for a vibrant, personal take on a modern shelving setup for books, homeware, and other artifacts.
For storage use, boxes can be randomly stacked or precisely coordinated into a tight grid, and the ability to leave open areas between boxes provides additional storage flexibility.
On the design concept for the Stacked Storage System, De Smedt explains:
“The design aims at identifying this very intricate space in the world of shelving where storage, display, and versatility become one. I have moved homes countless times and it has made me see my belongings in a new light, valuing their ability to adapt to new and ever-changing surroundings to a high degree.”

“I had some shelving units stacked atop one another in my home which worked but was also a mess. It was there that I discovered the incredible flexibility that could be found if the design was executed in the right way,” he continues.
Using De Smedt’s Stacked Podium, storage settings can be created within any room and in a simple configuration that echoes the simplicity and materiality of Scandinavian design while serving as a functional storage element and a room divider at one and the same time.
The Stacked Storage System makes a great addition to the modern home office with its simple lines, functional modules, and configuration possibilities, allowing the user to create a setup according to their exact needs.
A Stacked configuration is never final and can always be rearranged or enriched with more modules.

On the design for Stacked, De Smedt reiterates: “Design should always have a characteristic expression while serving an obvious function. I found that shelving systems often only fulfilled one of the two and from there grew the idea for Stacked.”
“It prompted me to design a system of modules in three sizes that can be arranged and rearranged in any way you’d like, making for a unique storage solution.”
“Stacked is a simple and efficient storage system that can be personalized to the needs of your home.”
Stacked comes in white, midnight blue, light grey, and grey.

Every side is cut out of MDF, then assembled, glued together, and painted with three layers of PU lacquer.
For Stacked oak, every side is cut out of MDF with oak veneer then assembled and glued together.
The modules should always be connected with Stacked Clips or be wall-mounted.
About Stacked and Scandinavian design, De Smedt elaborates:
“It has evolved in the past years from a veneration of the simple and pure lines of the classics to something more fluid through its involvement of multicultural issues, political presence, and opportunist productive methods. Its outcome has become something more eclectic and colorful, while the consistency of the classics is still oddly maintained as if it was genetic.”
