Henrik Fisker the Danish automotive designer and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles promises the most sustainable 300-mile range on a single charge SUV with a high-performance variant targeting 0-60 mph time under three seconds with the launch of the new Fisker brand—the 2022 Ocean.
The luxury vehicle is intended to be the first of three in a lineup of mass-market all-electric vehicles designed by Henrik Fisker and produced in the US.
In an effort to persuade customers, the Fisker Ocean is the first of his vehicles aimed at the mass market, with a promised price tag of $37,499.
And with a design analogous to the compelling Range Rover Evoque, the sleek, sporty 2022 Fisker Ocean could prove to be a persuasive entry among the burgeoning EV SUV segment.
The new Fisker Ocean electric SUV is stunningly elegant with simplicity woven in a sculptured body.
As a designer, Fisker is known for his sensational sports car creations, including the BMW Z8, Aston Martin DB9, and his own short-lived Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid luxury sedan.
The first glimpses at the Ocean’s interior reveal a straightforward layout modern, high-tech cabin with simple controls.
The car’s seats are trimmed using recycled polyester fibres, while its interior carpets are made from recycled nylon, sourced from abandoned fishing nets (which ties-in rather nicely with the SUV’s nameplate).
Front and center is a 16-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, flanked by a 9.8-inch screen that serves as the instrument panel.
Along with a large touchscreen, the Fisker’s dashboard incorporates a digital gauge cluster, a head-up display, and a white faux-suede material that spans across it.
In contrast to the cabin of the Tesla Model Y — which can be minimalist to a fault — the Ocean’s touchscreen features a row of buttons underneath for accessing high-level interface functions.
The steering wheel also has a traditional set of controls to interact with the numerous systems in play.
Fisker also says it plans to include an augmented reality navigation system, although the specifics of the hardware are yet to be confirmed.
The Ocean’s full-length panoramic roof is fitted with solar panels, which drip-feeds the SUV’s battery pack and provides a claimed additional range of 1,000 miles per year.
In terms of sustainability, Fisker says the Ocean has been designed to be as ecologically as possible.
Fisker says it will also utilize the discarded rubber waste from tire production for several components in the Ocean, which prevents the offcuts from going to landfills and ultimately lowers the SUV’s carbon footprint.
Fisker states that the Ocean will use an 80kWh battery pack, offering between 250 and 300 miles of range.
According to Fisker: “The future of mobility is about enjoying an electric vehicle without hassle, long-term commitment and the prohibitively high cost of ownership. Driving the Fisker Ocean will be easy: through a flexible lease via a mobile app”.
“And we take care of all the service and maintenance. Simply put, we’re introducing the future of hassle-free, fun and easy e-mobility.”
If Fisker can stick to its proposed sub-$40,000 price point, the 2022 Fisker Ocean could be an intriguing choice for a small all-electric SUV.
