Hong Kong, China
On display at the TKO Plaza in Hong Kong, Christmas Grove by Aron Tsang, Carla Divry, Frida Law, and Wesley Ho of napp studio with Hattrick Creative is an environmentally friendly alternative to everyone’s favorite decorative Christmas tree created for Nan Fung Group.
Huge amount of wastes are generated in temporary installations and festive pop ups.
How could an alternative solution with a more wholistic material cycle be devised?
Scaffolding and bamboo structures are very unique, yet quite common in Hong Kong.
However, not many know that each bamboo piece can be used only three times on-site and then has to be discarded in the landfill.
Tons of bamboo are scrapped every day in Hong Kong, becoming a material inspiration for the creation of a very Hong Kong “green” Christmas tree.
The structure is composed of layers of elliptical cones that are rotated, creating an optical illusion that these layers of cones are swinging in motion.
But a “green” project doesn’t have to look green.
In this case, some portions are dyed and painted with festive red and pink colors.
The uncolored ones have the potential to be turned into bamboo mushes for growing new plants, completing a full material cycle.
The colored ones are further deployed to create useful furniture or other objects with a third life.
