Günsterode, Germany
Philipp Nitsche and Johannes Boscher from Studio Nitsche have designed the first residence in “Los Angeles”—a project by the German artist Jonas von Ostrowski.

In the next few years, Los Angeles will be a habitable sculpture garden that will be created on the 3,000 m² site on the outskirts of the village of Günsterode, not far from Kassel.
Los Angeles is a meeting place, a place to work and stay for artists, architects, and theorists.

Residencies in Los Angeles aim to produce artistic works that are site-specific and site-bound.
The first object to be built is the “House with Clear Shapes and a Complex Entrance.”

From the design by Jonas von Ostrowski, a buildable building was developed by Studio Nitsche in close cooperation with the artist.
The residence is a three-person dwelling formed volumetrically by the superimposition of two elementary volumes, a triangle, and a square.

The intersection of the geometries generates four elementary functions—entrance, passageway, staircase, and living room—which differ from each other in the selection of material, color, and type of lighting.
It was a great challenge to guarantee the authenticity of the art work during this realization.

The choice of construction and the materials used also had to allow for the desired high proportion of in-house work during implementation.
Great importance was also attached to sustainability criteria.

The House with Clear Shapes and a Complex Entrance has no further divisions other than those resulting from the superimposition of the two volumes.
The form of the exterior is translated into the interior and vice versa.

All the furnishings are conceived and constructed by Jonas von Ostrowski as independent units, sculptural objects capable of defining space.
