Tokyo, Japan
“The natural elegance of the project emphasizes the harmonious relationship between the landscape and its surrounding context, which creates a humble appearance with a village-like fascinating indoor space,” states Sou Fujimoto.
“The entire building can be understood as gardens within a box.”
“The openness and transparency of the building also echoes the theme of reform and opening-up.”
“Meanwhile, the multilayered façade system provides a variety of spatial expressions within the
changing light.”

Sou Fujimoto together with collaborating architects Donghua Architectural Design Consulting has been named for the final winning plan in the international competition for the design of the 90,000-square meters Shenzhen Reform and Opening Exhibition Hall.
The project, defined by its luminous and translucent façade, is intended as a “window” into Shenzhen, displaying and publicizing the city’s achievements over recent decades.

The Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall will be built into a world-class, China-leading, large-scale comprehensive modern exhibition hall with Shenzhen characteristics, a “window” for displaying and publicizing important achievements of reform and opening up, important reception and visiting places, and specialized research and material evidence collection institution for reform and opening up.
Shenzhen is known as a modern, international and innovative city of landmark buildings; an important carrier for Shenzhen’s public culture and urban civilization image display.
The site is located in the core area of Futian District, Shenzhen, in the middle of the Xiangmihu area, on the north side of Shennan Avenue, and on the axis of the Xiangmihu Shanhai Ecological Corridor. The land area is approximately 34,900 square meters.
The exhibition hall will have a complex program: a site welcoming guests to the city, an institution collecting research materials, a landmark to signify Shenzhen’s innovative and international brand and a window of Shenzhen’s culture and people.

The project mainly includes an exhibition area, collection storage protection area, social education area, public service area, comprehensive business and academic research area, equipment room and underground parking lot.
The international design competition was divided into four stages; and from 47 registered teams 15 design teams were selected including: Fuksas Architectures and Rl/Stoss, Inc.; gmp International GmbH; PES-Architects Ltd.; LMK Architecture International Limited; Tongji University Architectural Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd.; Beijing Institute of Architectural Design Co., Ltd./Zhubo Design Co., Ltd.; China Architecture Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd.; Xu Liyan Architects Co., Ltd.; and Shenzhen Motai Architectural Design and Consulting Co., Ltd.
Located in the center of the site with a restrained and elegant posture, it is in harmony with the
relationship between the landscape and the site. Trying to show people with a humble attitude, the interesting interior space resembles a village.

The entire building can be understood as a “garden in a box,” and the openness and transparency of the building echo the theme of the reform and opening up the exhibition hall.

The juxtaposition of the multi-layer skin system allows the building to present a variety of expressions as the light changes.
