Sydney, Australia
The Atlassian Headquarters in Sydney combines environmental responsibility with urbanistic vision.
High-tech giant Atlassian has revealed plans to build a 40-storey building as its new headquarters in Sydney. At 180 meters, this will be the tallest hybrid timber building in the world. The building will be located in a new tech precinct in inner Sydney.
Renderings show that the new tower will be 40 stories and 590 feet tall once complete in 2025.
The tower is designed to reflect Atlassian’s core values around sustainability and workplace culture. It will be the tallest commercial hybrid timber tower in the world and is at the leading edge in its application of carbon sequestering mass-timber construction. The new building will be home to a beloved youth hostel currently on the site, new public access to a preserved historic train shed, ample civic space and amenities, select retail and thousands of technology workers when complete.

The tower will be the icon and anchor of Sydney’s developing technology district in the area around historic Central Station. The combined focus on wellness, placemaking, environmental innovation and overall design excellence marks the tower as a new model for other global cities to follow in addressing the dual challenges of the climate crisis and civic cohesion.
The open garden spaces are key to the tower’s exceptional environmental innovation and diminished ecological footprint. Taking advantage of Sydney’s temperate climate, the operable facades allow large areas of each floor to function without mechanical cooling and air handling. Together with the novel use of mass timber, the innovative facade enables the project to reduce carbon emissions by 50% over a ten-year period.
Speaking about Atlassian’s new solar-powered tech tower, Atlassian Co-Founder, Scott Farquhar, says the company’s new headquarters in Sydney’s planned tech precinct will host thousands of workers and embody “the best new ideas”, including a solar-energy-generating facade — inspiration for a post-COVID, yet still warming world.
Atlassian was founded in Sydney, Australia in 2002. Guided by its mission, which is to help unleash the potential of every team, the company is involved in the development of collaboration software that facilitates the organization, discussion, and completion of work done by teams.
The building serves as an anchor for the transformation of Railway Square into Sydney’s future ‘Silicon Valley,’ according to the New South Wales Government.
Earlier last year, Minister Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres unveiled the new $2.5 billion Central Place development by Dexus-Frasers will form a key part of the rezoned precinct.
“Located alongside the new Atlassian headquarters, Central Place alone will deliver over 150,000 square metres of commercial floor space for technology and innovation companies,” Mr Ayres said.
“The project will support more than 700 jobs in construction and more than 10,000 jobs once complete.
“It will help cement innovation and technology as key drivers of growth, contributing to secure job creation across all industries.”
