Awaji, Hyogo, Japan
Shigeru Ban Architects have designed a new wellness retreat on Japan’s Awaji Island that is perched on a ridge in a lush landscape.

The new structure is defined by an ultra-narrow frame (7.2m wide and 90m long) that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.
The site is also located along the meridian 135° east line, significant because, in 1888, it became the standard meridian for all of Japan, allowing precise times to be fixed.

The project features a bridge-like wooden structure suspended above the lush landscape, providing visitors with a Zen experience.
The Vierendeel timber girder allows for a 21-meter span and a significant cantilever on one end of the 90-meter-long structure.
The plan of an accommodation facility where guests can experience “zazen” on a small, lush site on Awaji Island.

Half of the building is suspended by two steel column bases with wooden vierendeel on the first floor allowing a 21m span and the whole second floor will be a zazen studio.
A café with a series of PHP arch frames and a hut is planned for future affiliated use.

The Zenbo Seinei retreat, which will focus on meditation and healthy food, is currently under construction and is set to open this spring.
Zenbo Seinei will offer zen meditation, yoga, tofu-based meals, an outdoor hot spring, as well as rooms where guests can stay over.
