Düsseldorf, Germany
European Prize for Architecture laureate Santiago Calatrava is planning a new major development in the state capital of Düsseldorf: a high-rise tower on the Tuchtinsel on Schadowstrasse, reaching 129 meters in height.
Planned with The CENTRUM Group, the building will close a gap in urban development on the Tuchtinsel while respecting the listed Dreischeibenhaus on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz.
Calatrava’s new tower is located next to “Kö Bogen 2,” designed by ingenhoven architects, which has been a huge urban success with over 30,000 hornbeams planted on the building over a length of eight kilometers, earning the business and office ensemble the title of “Europe’s largest green façade.”
For the new Düsseldorf tower, Calatrava is planning a slim and elegant tower that will have around 40,000 square meters of space.
The slim new building will accommodate retail space on the ground floor and first floor.
The architect has already presented the draft to the city of Düsseldorf’s high-rise advisory board.
All property owners, the city and the high-rise advisory board are involved in the planning and work confidently on the implementation of the project.
Calatrava states: “The city of Düsseldorf is located on the Rhine, one of the most historically important cultural arteries in Europe. It is an honor for me to be able to build in this vibrant city, which has exceptional contemporary architecture from the 20th and 21st centuries. Together with my team, we will do our best to make a positive contribution to Düsseldorf extraordinary building culture.”
Uwe Reppegather, managing partner of the CENTRUM Group, says: “We are grateful that we were able to work with Santiago Calatrava for this elegant urban high-rise sculpture in Düsseldorf.”
According to current planning, construction on the high-rise should begin between 2024 and 2027.
