Lyon, France
Designed by Europe 40 Under 40 laureate Nicolas Mallet of Mallet Morales and his team, the Lyon project is part of a wider urban composition of the Lyon city, in France.
Nicolas Mallet was recently awarded a 2020 European 40 Under 40 Award from The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum.
The project belongs both to the heterogeneous and emblematic district of Gerland and to a garden complex.
Lyon project can be described as a large-scale urban form, essentially made up of housing articulated surrounding a vast collective green space.
The main idea and aim of this garden complex is to create social links and relationships between all social groups.
With the concept of “living together” in mind, the architect proposed a coherent architecture design that allows the feeling of belonging as well as familiarity.
The chosen materials of the project echo the contrasting landscape of the project; industrial and vegetal.
Through its sobriety, its constructive rigor, and its rational volumes, the project fits coherently into this new urban composition.
The team has favored the use of a durable material, white concrete, which worked in two ways: smooth and sanded.
