Hollywood, California, USA
“Hollywood has been a signature center for culture and creativity for a long time,” said Ma Yansong, founding principal of MAD Architects.
“The Star will be the new iconic landmark in Hollywood and continue to nurture the public’s inspiration and creativity.”
MAD Architects together with SALT Landscape Architects have designed a new $500m tower for developer The Star LLC. as an icon of the Hollywood skyline and a destination for visitors, with lush landscaping, sky gardens, and a funicular cable rail to take visitors to the terrarium-like rooftop dome, which will also feature a restaurant and event space with 360-degree views of the L.A. skyline.
The Star replaces a small office building at 6061 Sunset Boulevard with approximately 500,000 square feet. It would be across the street from Sunset Gower Studios, and about a block from the Hollywood Palladium and the planned Palladium Residences tower project.

Shaped like a flattened sphere, the 22-story office block is proposed for a site at 6061 Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood, Los Angeles.
The tower volume is enclosed in a giant glass dome and marked by a superstructure that replicates the silhouette of an egg.
The thin band that runs across the sculptural structure serves a practical purpose: it acts both as a funicular track to easily transport visitors to the rooftop restaurant and as a space for events, with a 360-degree observation deck.
The upper portion will feature a garden as well, providing the top of the structure with a terrarium-like atmosphere.
The landscape design by SALT landscape architects is characterized by a series of hanging gardens and rich vegetation throughout the building, large open spaces, and green terraces.
The upper part of the building will also contain a garden in which the atmosphere will be similar to that of a greenhouse or terrarium.
“Since Hollywood is the birthplace of the entertainment industry, The Star’s prime location on Sunset Boulevard and its unique design present an unparalleled opportunity for a major company to make a bold statement and proudly plant their flag in the rightful home of entertainment in L.A.,” said Edgar Khalatian, who represents the developer, The Star LLC.
The project is expected to open in 2026.
