The Garage House by Hyunjoon Yoo of Hyunjoonyoo Architects realizes the dream of its client to create an interconnected space for enjoying a car hobby and entertaining friends.

The client’s dream was to have a house with a private garage, which served as the basis for this project.
The key to this design was to meet the client’s demand to enjoy hobbies and parties in the garage and yard.
The Garage House has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Awards Honorable Mention by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

The site needed to be set back 2.5 meters from the adjacent land, and accordingly, it was disadvantageous to freely configure its area and shape.
Therefore, each space of the building was designed to be connected and expanded around the courtyard arranged adjacent to the setback line.
In order to maximize expansion, variable sliding doors, not walls, were installed at the end of the setback line to ensure expansion and privacy.
Each room of the house, such as the garage, living room, and kitchen, was formed around the courtyard, so the relatively narrow-looking area was resolved through visual scalability.

The occupant’s sight is naturally directed toward the courtyard.
The client also wanted to have a private space, even while the sight of family members intersect through the courtyard.
Therefore, the windows of each room were planned to be connected to more than two spaces.
Thus, the sight was sometimes planned to face the road and sometimes the sky.
