Athens, Greece
Understanding that the Acropolis of Athens is one of the most important monuments of world culture, Eleftheria Deko and her lighting studio at Eleftheria Deko & Associates approached the new lighting design of the Acropolis and surrounding monuments with profound respect for these venerated ancient classical monuments.
After all, the Acropolis is a living symbol that has stood the test of time and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
The project was funded and supported by the Onassis Foundation and the Greek Ministry of Culture and was unveiled to the world at the end of September 2020.
Before applying their thoughts on paper, Deko observed the characteristics of this unique place, studied its history, the forms and materials, the visibility from different points of the city, and the significance of this landmark.
The final design approach was to highlight the beauty of the architecture, the timelessness of sculptures, the whiteness of the Pendelikon marble in contrast to the robustness of the Sacred rock, and the heroism of the fortification walls.
She achieved the differentiation through the use of varying focusing angles, differentiation of color temperatures, and of light intensity.
Lastly, Deko’s lighting vision was to make the site look outstanding at night from multiple of directions both up close and from afar and by breathing a new, contemporary life into the ancient monuments of the Acropolis.
