San Jose, California, USA
Designed by DLR Group|KwanHenmi along with the developer Core Companies, Gateway Tower will stretch to 262-feet tall and become the most notable addition to the downtown San Jose skyline.
The planned 390,000-SF, 25-storey, mixed-use luxury high-rise is located in the heart of Silicon Valley.
A major retail district in the 1800’s, SoFA (South of First Area) has gradually evolved into the arts and entertainment destination for which it is now known.
The changing demographics have made the neighborhood one of the most attractive in burgeoning San Jose.
DLR Group|KwanHenmi’s design will introduce a new typology, while paying homage to the context that enables it.
The residential/commercial development will provide high-end housing above modern, street level retail.
As part of the new development, Core Companies intends to build and expand the history of the site by preserving the facades of two historic buildings—Red Front Surplus and Herrold College— as well as create an exhibit of the history.
The two historic storefronts, restored and integrated into the tower’s design, will preserve an element of the existing, street-level experience.
Compartmentalization below—aided by the historic facades—and the texture above ties the various elements of the design to the scale of the existing buildings; Gateway Tower itself is far larger, in line with the recent and planned developments in the area.
While the intended resident is tech-oriented, the project will reflect the arts-oriented community that revitalized SoFA in that latter part of the 20th century.
