Wallmakers, the Indian architects led by Vinu Daniel, designed the Toy Storey Residence, a house that creatively utilized old toys as part of its façade after realizing that plastic has infiltrated almost every aspect of our daily lives, including 90% of the world’s toys.
Toy Storey Residence is located in Vadakara, North Kerala, an area where the consumption of toys is the most in the state.
Therefore, Wallmakers had the idea to create a circular home accessible from every side with a verandah supported by toys and old Mangalore tiles.
The central courtyard is the heart of the building. The CSEB-Toy Jaali wall, made from compressed stabilized earth blocks using soil from the site, serves as a perforated external skin that enables continuous cross-ventilation and improved insulation.
The residence is conceived with the idea of a “House within a house” where the large living space will always be frequented by neighbors and members of the community.
The Japanese-style inspired shoji screens become translucent partitions providing light and visual connectivity for the private half.
