Como, Italy
Designers Draga & Aurel introduced FLARE, their latest capsule collection which they created in collaboration with Todd Merrill Studio.
FLARE is a vibrant collection featuring seven variations of coffee tables and a totem sculpture that delves into the dynamic interplay of color and light refraction.
All the objects are crafted entirely from Lucite an acrylic material processed by hand with an innovative technique collaborating with skilled artisans on Lake Como, Italy.
Draga Obradovic and Aurel K. Basedow, the founders of Draga & Aurel and designers of the collection, have a multidisciplinary background in art, fashion, and craftsmanship they like to explore artistic approaches and artistic and exciting materials.
For FLARE, the design duo was inspired by the three-dimensional color study of South Korean artist Jiyong Lee and the intricate compositional technique of Vasa Mihich in acrylic sculptures.
They aimed to explore the breakdown and composition of matter through the concept of refraction.
Colored Lucite sheets of various shapes and thicknesses were combined, cut, and glued together to create mesmerizing objects with captivating hues.
The result is versatile objects that transform when viewed from different angles.
As Draga Obradovic states, “FLARE is a spark of color that explodes, frees itself, and takes shape. It’s joy, experimentation, intuition, and freedom of expression.”
