Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design are proud to jointly announce the winners of the Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting 2024 for the third consecutive year since its successful debut.
In 1949, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) launched the Prize Designs for Modern Furniture to promote outstanding contemporary design.
By showcasing exemplary pieces in the furniture industry, MoMA aimed to inspire manufacturers to produce these designs for the mass market.
Seven decades later, Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design have revived this historic event to showcase the latest design innovations in modern furniture, lighting, textiles, and floor and wall coverings from Europe, Asia, Australia, and North and South America.
“With the rise of Modernism,” stated Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, President/CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum, “innovative techniques and technologies emerged, leading to the creation of brilliantly simple, stackable, functional, and comfortable furniture, along with advanced lighting solutions.
These could be licensed, mass-produced, and made available to anyone in the consumer market.”
“Democratic Design in the 1950s, balanced by new materials and techniques like tubular steel and wood-bending, brought new energy to the design of furniture and furnishings.
At the same time, lighting, textiles, and wall and flooring treatments were being experimented with in unprecedented ways.”
“The remake of Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Designers aims to recapture the bold spirit of vitality and experimentation exhibited by the world’s most prominent architects, designers, and manufacturers, as originally showcased by MoMA in the 1950s.”
“This international Prize Design competition aims to redefine the term ‘iconic’ by recognizing and awarding the world’s leading design and manufacturing hubs,” Narkiewicz-Laine continues.
For 2024, Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting awarded product design in the categories of furniture and lighting from the following 30 nations: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam.
