Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum Formally Present the 2025 Future House Awards for New Global Residential Design, Home Extensions, Interiors, Vacation Homes, Apartments, Condominiums and High-Rise Living at a Gala Reception at The European Centre in Athens, Greece on October 8.
This year, Future House Awards® offers a glimpse into the most inspiring new residential architecture, interior design, landscaping, urbanism, and more from around the world and by the most influential global architecture practices on five continents.
The annual competition is a global program designed to find the latest innovations and global directions in new residential architecture from single-family luxury and vacation homes, multi-family housing, new residential sky towers, restoration/preservation, and social and sustainable residential design.
The program aims to promote and recognize innovative projects that have a significant impact on the future of residential architecture worldwide.
This year, Future House Awards offers a glimpse into the most inspiring new residential architecture, interior design, landscaping, urbanism, and more from around the world and by the most influential global architecture practices on five continents.
For 2025, leaders of the design process for the most innovative Future House include many of the top design thinkers of our time: Shigeru Ban, Henriquez Partners Architects, Antonio Citterio, Patricia Viel, Elliott Architects, Elkus Manfredi, Gómez Platero, Stephen Louni, Leers Weinzapfel Associates, Michelangeli Design, Marvel Architects, Messana O’Rorke, Paul Lukez Architecture, Rand Elliott, Sanjay Puri, and XTEN Architecture.
From this year’s short-list of 500 outstanding projects, 70 awards were given to new distinguished designs in Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America.
“Today’s new residential design is a process of creating functional, comfortable, and innovative homes,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, architecture critic and Museum President/CEO, The Chicago Athenaeum, “increasingly incorporating flexible layouts, AI integration, and sustainable practices from the single-family private home and vacation dream houses to residential skyscrapers.”
“While both modern and contemporary house plans feature clean lines and open spaces, modern designs are based on 21st-century principles, focusing on minimalism and functionality, while contemporary plans embrace current design trends and often blend traditional and modern elements.”
“Trends include climate-adaptive structures, modular or 3D-printed construction, neuro architecture for well-being, and the integration of human-centric design principles to create spaces that evolve with changing lifestyles.”
“The contemporary-style homes are always designed with energy efficiency in mind.”
“Features like expansive windows maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting, while open floor plans promote better airflow.”
“Many designs also incorporate eco-friendly materials and energy-saving technologies, such as solar panels, green roofs, and sustainable building techniques.”
“These many design approaches for today’s human living demonstrate how each architect sought to iconize every best in home design style,” continues Narkiewicz-Laine
With such a large number of entries from the top firms in the country and abroad, the competition was fierce, and our jury had some very heavy lifting to do.
This year’s awards were selected by a jury and based on criteria that highlight the pushing of the envelope for the most innovative design.

“Judging from this year’s winners, when it comes to residential architecture design, the environmental footprint is a huge priority for designers around the world,” states Narkiewicz-Laine.
“In addition, an environmentally resilient design with natural materials has gained great traction.”
“Not only does this involve using sustainable materials, but it also boosts the energy performance.”
“Some of the elements of green architecture and sustainable architecture include waste reduction, conservation of resources, and energy-efficient elements, such as solar panels, biophilic design elements, and making use of natural lighting with large windows and big doors that let in sunlight and bring nature inside.”

The 2024-2025 Future House winners are featured in an upcoming book entitled Future House: Modern Living and Dynamic Functionality by Metropolitan Arts Press and edited by Christian Narkiewicz-Laine.
The book documents new and radical design ideas that are shaping tomorrow’s domestic landscape, from stealth-tech, eco-friendly homes to new energy-efficient residential high-rise towers.
On Friday, October 10, Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum open the exhibition “Future House 2025” at the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies in Athens, Greece.
The exhibition continues until November 26.
