Capaccio Paestum, Italy

The sustainable development plan that was carried out for the 13 km coastal strip of Capaccio Paestum has defined the integral public and private strategies for the recovery and the urban, landscape and environmental development of the coastline.
Sustainable Development of the Coastal Strip of Paestum Waterfront by Luca Cerullo Architects, won an 2025 International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

With 60% included within in the Natura 2000 area, the coastline is in a state of abandonment with viability, parking lots in many dune areas and unregulated buildings, for which different actions are planned.
Among those: the reorganization of connections to favor sustainable accessibility, collective mobility, diversification of tourism and the revaluation of territorial singularities.
The project area, the object of the first intervention, is located in the 3 km area with the greatest anthropic weight and built-up urban transformation, where a coastal park has been designed using a deformable mesh, capable of regenerating resilient natural spaces through temporary and dynamic use of resources, adapting to the changing natural system.

The first public action that we are carrying out in this section, defines a new promenade through the conversion of road, occupied by traffic and vehicle parking, into a pedestrian area.
The intervention regenerates most of the paved surface and creates, in the central area coinciding with the passage of the networks of facilities, a naturally inspired promenade that turns a landscape and environmental fracture into an element that reintegrates, with its curvilinear shapes, the transversal natural relationship between sea, dunes and forests.
The promenade includes different color areas that allow easy orientation in the different sectors of the coast.
