Halo is an innovative retail checkout system that uses computer vision technology to instantly recognise multiple items placed on its scan surface, creating a frictionless shopping experience.
Items are automatically itemised into a virtual basket for payment, eliminating the need for individual barcode scanning.
NCR Voyix – Halo, won a 2025 Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies.
It is a retail solution that is aesthetically novel and showcases innovative technology at the checkout experience while streamlining shopping into a faster and more convenient experience.
With an accessible form factor and a large scan area that does not limit users to an enclosed scanning and handling merchandise space.
It integrates 4 cameras and a specially designed LED lighting strip around the edge to aid in item recognition.

The design includes a spacious open scan area that allows for natural handling of items without enclosure restrictions.
It offers flexible installation options, functioning as a standalone module or as an add-on to existing self-checkout terminals, and can be mounted on countertops or walls.
Equipped with four cameras and specially designed LED lighting, it ensures accurate item recognition.
The overhead frame is positioned to stay out of the user’s way during transactions, enhancing convenience and efficiency.
User-centred design enhances the checkout experience by increasing transaction speed by 46.5% for first-time users.
It is ideal for small basket retail with 7 to 10 items, allowing shoppers to place multiple items simultaneously on the scan surface.

The design reduces the need for touch display interaction, benefiting shoppers with mobility challenges, while maintaining traditional side-to-side checkout movement patterns and eliminating barcode scanning.
An illuminated frame clearly defines the transaction zone, providing an intuitive and convenient user experience.
The streamlined retail design significantly improves efficiency by reducing checkout bottlenecks in high-traffic environments and seamlessly complements existing self-checkout systems without requiring users to learn new behaviours.
Its distinctive form factor and innovative technology enhance retailer brand image while delivering a more engaging and convenient checkout experience.
The system is self-training, learning new items as shoppers use it, and its modular nature allows retailers to adapt it beyond traditional retail, including inventory management and various item recognition applications.
Additionally, a wide-angle top view of the transaction area enables AI to detect abnormal activities, helping to prevent shrinkage.

Inclusivity is a core feature, with the design accommodating a wide range of user anthropometrics—from the tallest standing users to the smallest seated ones.
The overhead integration supports natural arm and hand movements, while strategically placed lighting enhances both camera recognition and user visibility.
This thoughtful approach ensures the system meets global accessibility standards, making it usable for a diverse customer base.
Aesthetically, the system features an edge-lit loop frame that clearly defines the transaction zone while providing a modern and welcoming appearance.
The white and silver colour scheme emphasises the openness of the frame, and functional LED lighting not only illuminates the area but also changes colours for alerts.
To optimise item recognition and improve durability, the scan surface is coated with a special anti-reflective matte gray powder that also resists scratches, ensuring a high-quality user experience.
Halo represents a significant advancement in retail checkout technology, balancing innovation with usability to create a faster, more convenient shopping experience without disrupting familiar checkout behaviours.
