London, United Kingdom
With a strong commitment to sustainability, 18 Blackfriars Road designed by Foster+ Partners in collaboration with Lipton Rogers and real estate developer Hines, is poised to serve as a model for net-zero carbon operation.
The development will exclusively utilize electric power and ground source heat pumps to meet 95% of its heating requirements.
The 18 Blackfriars Road project will breathe new life into a neglected two-acre brownfield site that has remained vacant for the past two decades.
The project is strategically crafted to offer affordable housing, complimentary workspace for local entrepreneurs, and a cultural hub for the community.
It is poised to make history as the UK’s first high-rise development to attain the prestigious WELL Community Gold Standard, signaling its dedication to fostering improved health and well-being for its residents and the surrounding community.
Situated strategically near key transport hubs and cultural landmarks, the development compromises three buildings: residential units, office space, and amenities such as outdoor terraces and communal areas.
Additionally, the design makes provisions for affordable workspaces, assembly rooms, educational facilities, and children’s play areas, fostering an inclusive environment.
“Working closely with Hines and Lipton Rogers, we have designed a healthy, mixed-use development that plugs into – and seeks to significantly enhance – the existing urban fabric,” says Nigel Dancey, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners.
With a strong emphasis on biodiversity, the project seeks to augment green spaces by introducing approximately 100 new trees, thereby enriching the area’s ecological diversity.
By setting a high standard for the surrounding community, the development endeavors to establish itself as a benchmark for premium workspace in London.
Additionally, it aims to bolster the city’s reputation as a global center for culture, education, and commerce.
