Designed by Lee F. Mindel of SheltonMindel for the art collector Laurie Tisch, this residential project centers around the integration of a 16-foot-wide painting from Frank Stella’s “Protractor” series, a vibrant piece inherited from Tisch’s parents.
Named “Hey STELLA!!!” residence, the project has been awarded a 2024 American Architecture Awards from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture, Design, and Urban Studies.
To accommodate the artwork, Mindel introduced a partition wall clad in white-lacquer panels with minimalist crown molding that curves just below the ceiling.
This design incorporates state-of-the-art LED lighting and a motorized scrim to protect the painting from sunlight, all without lowering the existing low ceilings.
The residence features additional artworks, including Olafur Eliasson’s “Your Lost Outside,” a wall-mounted installation of 24 glass-and-stainless-steel spheres representing the hours of the day, and Vik Muniz’s “Eight Color Spectrum,” adding dynamic visual elements to the space.
Furnishings such as a 1940s curved sofa attributed to Viggo Boesen, upholstered in Mongolian lambskin, and custom-designed glass-top tables from Mindel’s Veritas collection for Ralph Pucci, complement the art collection and the oceanfront settings.
