Xuefeng Li of Everest Group leads the construction of a transitional housing initiative, providing basic housing security, offering opportunities for rehabilitation and rebuilding for the homeless population helping them move away from street life, while also offering essential support facilities for short-term shelter residents.
Named Love & Hope, the project has been awarded a 2024 American Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
Architecture can play a crucial role in addressing the housing crisis in Philadelphia, especially through the creation of transitional housing projects to assist those in need.
To help residents reintegrate into society, I have incorporated multiple public spaces at every turn of the building, providing areas for learning and interaction.
To achieve this goal, collaboration with local resource organizations and the community will be essential.
This may involve vocational training programs to help individuals acquire job skills and employment opportunities, mental health support to assist them in dealing with past traumas and challenges, and social skills training to help them rebuild interpersonal relationships and community connections.
The building twists at a precise angle of 22.3 degrees, directly facing the city center, allowing the magnificent skyline of Philadelphia to unfold before the eyes and providing an unprecedented view.
A continuous public pathway on the top of the building allows people to run all the way from the ground to the rooftop, traversing through green spaces.
Even the homeless will have the opportunity to admire the beautiful urban skyline, which will greatly uplift their spirits and provide them with inspiration and strength.
The slope represents a symbol, representing the journey of a vulnerable or ordinary person facing challenges, conquering difficulties, and achieving success.
Overall, this design not only provides practical living spaces and public pathways but also offers opportunities and hope for the homeless through its unique form and symbolic meaning.
It is not just a building; it is an inspiring place that provides an opportunity for the homeless to rebuild their lives, reintegrate into society, and embark on a path to success using their own strength.
