Chengdu, Sichuan, China
The UniFun Tianfu Chengdu mall designed by CLOU Architects together with Hong Kong Huayi Design Consultants (Shenzhen) seeks to integrate both online technology and commercial sensibilities into the architecture through modulated interactive façade systems.

Inspired by the aesthetics of the Rubik’s Cube, the 42,000 square meter mall’s facades feature a simple module that expands across various combinations.
The UniFun Tianfu Chengdu has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Awards Honorable Mention by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
Integrating abstract architectural form and digital promotion around a large-scale outdoor social space, the interactive facade systems of UniFun Tianfu Chengdu link the physical and the virtual world.

White pixel clusters featuring red details alternate with large multi-media screens, creating interchanging spatial and visual effects with the passage of time.
During the daytime, the cuboid volumes blend with the geometric urban surroundings of the neighborhood.
The stacked volumes create large communal outdoor terraces that invite locals and visitors to enjoy neighborhood life.

At night, the backlit facade panels of the new complex enrich the evening cityscape in a graphic sense of futurism.
One of the important factors that affect the media facade is lighting technology, for instance, the visual of a regular facade can be varied by lighting to present a series of free-flowing patterns.
Different lighting effects can be continuously adjusted to change the facade of the building, and will also interact with the multi-media screen.

From light to shade, color, graphics, and changes of the façade system, CLOU architects expect to achieve different visual effects for UniFun from the outside.
The project seeks to integrate both online technology and commercial sensibilities into the architecture through modulated interactive façade systems.
The digital canvas, as an upgrade of traditional façade advertising, has the potential to broadcast exciting and informative content in real-time such as branding images, online advertisement, social media activities, and offline event information.
