In early 2021, Álvaro Siza started talking with Portuguese watch brand Cauny about the design of an exclusive new edition watch.
Since then, the process of creating the new Cauny X Siza Vieira wristwatch has been a testament to extreme attention to every detail.
The result is an edition entirely designed by Siza and Cauny, from the dial to the hands, the bracelet to the case.
This edition is remarkable for watchmaking and design enthusiasts around the world.
When discussing the new Cauny X Siza Vieira, the head of Cauny, Filipe Costa Almeida, expressed his “great honor to be launching these watches.”
“Álvaro Siza is perhaps the greatest architect of our time, but also one of the people with whom it was easiest to work.”
“Throughout each step of the creative process, we witnessed his enormous creative vitality, the speed of thought, the freedom in drawing, the incessant curiosity, the rigor with which he approaches every detail,” continues Almeida.
“These are long-known qualities of Álvaro Siza; the novelty is to reveal them, this time, on a wristwatch. It is undoubtedly one of the proudest moments in Cauny’s centenary journey and our greatest contribution to the history of watch design.”
Siza highlighted the “beautiful and stimulating exercise” of designing a wristwatch for Cauny, explaining that he followed the process of creating this edition “with the purpose of making this transformation not be imperceptible, and also that this watch would look like a watch,” adding that “what is new does not have to be an aggression— and that is not always the case.”
The new Cauny X Siza Vieira edition in four versions will arrive in stores in October.
The launch date will be announced soon and the edition will be made available worldwide.
Cauny, founded in 1927 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, was one of the most charismatic brands in the world between the 1950s and the 1970s with its original design made in Portugal.
It has been reinvented for today’s watch enthusiasts.
