Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum honor the 2026 winners with two days of conversation, exhibition, and celebration.

Athens has long been a city where ideas are shaped and shared, and this October it became a meeting point for architects and designers from around the world.
Global Design News, in collaboration with The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, brought together the winners of the 2026 Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting and the 2026 Future House® International Residential Awards for two days of encounters, an exhibition opening, and an evening to remember.

A day of conversation
The program began with a day at the museum in Athens devoted to the people behind the work. Winners from different countries and disciplines met in person, many for the first time, and spent the day in open conversation about their projects, their influences, and the ideas that drive their practice.
The setting encouraged the kind of exchange that images and award citations cannot capture: questions about process, the thinking behind a detail, and the challenges of turning a concept into a built or manufactured reality.
For a portal dedicated to architecture and design news, it was a chance to move beyond the page and get to know the creators face to face.

The exhibition opens
The second day began with the opening of the exhibitions at the European Centre – Contemporary Space Athens, in the heart of the city. The winning furniture, lighting, and residential projects are presented through photographs, videos, and furniture pieces, with free admission for visitors.
The exhibition revives, in Athens, the spirit of the landmark 1949 Prize Designs for Modern Furniture organized by The Museum of Modern Art, which sought to promote outstanding contemporary design and bring it to a wider public.
Seven decades later, it sits alongside the Future House Awards, which spotlight pioneering homes “from a shed to a penthouse” and the search for a New Domestic Landscape.

An evening with the Acropolis
The same day culminated in a gala dinner with a view of the Acropolis. As the evening light settled over the rock and the Parthenon, winners, guests, and partners gathered to honor the year’s achievements.
The setting gave the occasion a particular weight: an ancient symbol of design and craftsmanship watching over a room full of people shaping how we will live in the future.
Toasts, conversations, and the honoring of the winners made for a warm and distinguished atmosphere, one that reflected both the ambition of the awards and the community they have built.

Looking ahead
For Global Design News, the gala was more than a ceremony. It showed what happens when a global design community comes together in one place, and it marks another step in the partnership with The Chicago Athenaeum to bring international design excellence to Athens.
The exhibition remains open until November 21, 2026, Tuesday to Saturday, 12:00–19:00, at the European Centre – Contemporary Space Athens, Mitropoleos 74.
