Los Angeles, California, USA
Located adjacent to Downtown Los Angeles and anchored into the hillside site, Tighe Architecture’s Wedge is a six-story building rising in the quickly developing area of Westlake with 54 residential units provided within the densely configured building.
The project has recently been awarded a 2023 American Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture, Design, and Urban Studies.
The podium houses the resident amenities and parking.
The housing is oriented around a central void that diagonally bisects the building. The central artery allows for natural light and ventilation to flow through.
The residential massing is pulled back from either corner of the podium to accommodate roof terraces at the third level.
Two separate patio decks are provided, complete with a swimming pool, barbecue areas, and other social spaces that take advantage of the views of the San Gabriel Mountains and the DTLA skyline.
A secondary steel tube structure is attached to the building that accommodates a brise soleil.
The layer of screening serves as a thermal barrier, integrates the unit terraces, and offers a strong street presence.
