Marupe, Latvia
Simplicity, clean lines, neutral colors, and uncluttered spaces are the main characteristics of the latest residential project by Around Architecture Studio, named Family Residence R, where a contemporary elegance can gracefully coexist with the beauty of surrounding nature.
A place to live, enjoy, entertain, and inspire – it is a one way how to describe this 320 m² family residence in Marupe, Latvia.
Building itself is situated in the northernmost portion of the land plot leaving the sunny garden at the Southern side in a great balance of beautiful views from the living spaces of the residence.
The project has recently been awarded a 2024 Future House Award by Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.
It embodies two characters – It is almost modest in nature and gives off a subtle appearance from the side of the entrance, but it also fully realizes its potential when you get a closer look at it.
This is achieved through a scenario of combinations of different viewpoints, intricate details that skillfully allow the light to create shadows, coexisting spaces, and willingness to enjoy them.
All the rooms are organized on a single floor with some noticeable variation in height.
Creating an appearance that the building is slightly levitating over the lawn. The living room’s ceiling height has been increased to a comfortable 3.40 meters by arranging the main living area on the same level as the yard.
Since all of the large windows can be slided open, it is possible to highlight the distinctions and affinities between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
The glass atrium or inner garden, which functions as the main focus point and is accessible from all directions, is a crucial component of the design.
It guarantees a connection with nature and lets in more natural light into the project.
The Around Architecture Studio team placed a pine tree inside the atrium, giving the homeowners a beautiful view even in the gloomiest and darkest months of the year.
The kitchen’s positioning is done perfectly to be able to enjoy the views to the garden while cooking or dining.
Adjacent to the kitchen island a wine cellar has been installed as a tiny basement with a glass covering that can be opened up automatically.
The large canopies that encircle the structure on its south side protect the interior rooms from direct sunlight and act as a natural cooler.
The pool water is heated by solar collectors installed on the building’s rooftop.
Each and every aspect of the project has been meticulously considered, down to the last millimeter.
The absence of columns creates a visual illusion that the building is levitating or gracefully elevated above the ground.
