Putuo District, Shanghai, China

A new cultural destination has opened in Shanghai’s Putuo District with the completion of Jia Art, a gallery designed by Foster + Partners as the centerpiece of the larger Changfeng mixed-use development.
Positioned at the intersection of two major urban axes, the 5,000-square-metre building serves as the social and cultural heart of a masterplan that brings together housing, offices, retail, public amenities, and green spaces within a vibrant “Live-Work-Play” environment.
More than a standalone exhibition venue, Jia Art has been conceived as a civic gathering place where art, education, and community engagement converge.
The gallery offers a flexible mix of exhibition halls, event spaces, educational facilities, hospitality areas, and lecture rooms, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and public interaction.

Its opening marks an important milestone in the ongoing transformation of the Changfeng district into a dynamic urban destination.
The building’s architecture draws inspiration from the natural landscape of nearby Changfeng Park.
Influenced by the geometry of the park’s spring blessing flowers, the gallery takes the form of four unfolding petals that emerge from the ground and curve upward to create a sculptural roof.
This floral concept informs every aspect of the design, from the building’s silhouette to its interior spatial experience.

Jia Art is composed of two interconnected structures linked by a dramatic double-height atrium.
The northern volume accommodates the primary exhibition galleries, while the southern building houses additional exhibition areas, hospitality functions, and educational spaces.
A central skylight introduces daylight deep into the building, illuminating the atrium and galleries while reinforcing the organic quality of the petal-inspired form.
The façade further enhances the building’s distinctive identity. Vertical tubular glass ribs rise across the exterior alongside mirror-polished stainless-steel panels that reflect changing daylight conditions throughout the day.

At night, integrated lighting transforms the gallery into a luminous landmark within the district.
On the western elevation, Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) panels provide additional privacy while maintaining the building’s sculptural character.
Inside, the architectural language remains consistent with the exterior expression.
Curved walls and flowing forms define the atrium, while exhibition spaces feature a restrained palette of natural materials and soft colours that create a calm backdrop for artworks.

The building’s symmetry and human-scaled proportions establish a welcoming atmosphere that contrasts with the intensity of the surrounding city.
As an integral component of the wider Changfeng development, Jia Art demonstrates how cultural architecture can strengthen urban identity and foster community life.
Extensive landscaping and connections to the district’s riverfront green corridor further reinforce the project’s commitment to wellbeing, public engagement, and environmental quality.
By placing art and culture at the center of a major mixed-use neighbourhood, Foster + Partners has created a new model for integrating civic life into large-scale urban development.
