Twill Chair by Gibson Karlo for DesignByThem is an all-timber-stacking dining chair that manages to be playful while being practical.
Subtle in aesthetic yet generous in practicality, Twill stacks four chairs high and features a large seat and sweeping backrest at just the right height to rest your elbows.
Twill has been awarded a 2023 Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
Initially inspired by the playful nostalgia of opening a fresh pack of plasticine, the design features extruded profiles and neatly trimmed ends.
“We love how the double profile looks and functions. It was inspired by plasticine strips and the repetition seen in Twill weaves. It creates a sense of ornament whilst creating strength in the legs and comfort in the backrest,” said Gibson Karlo’s designers, Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis.
A harmonious dialogue between form and function, the character of the design also enhances its functionality.
The double profile creates a sense of ornament whilst providing thicker, stronger legs and giving more surface area to the backrest for comfort.
The design features a compact footprint, which is particularly suitable for busy restaurants and cafes.
The main objective behind the chair’s design was to create something that is visually light while providing superior comfort. This ensures that even when placed in large numbers, the product does not overcrowd the room.
Made from solid FSC ash timber, Twill serves as a humble timber chair with plenty of character. Alongside practicality, visual flexibility is key to this design.
Optional upholstered seat pads are also available to add a soft touch and texture to the piece.
