Hillsborough, California, USA

Nestled adjacent to the classical Carolands Chateau, a magnificent architectural marvel of yesteryears, stands a modern abode, designed for a family of six.
This contemporary dwelling ingeniously utilizes its flat terrain, taking inspiration from its historical neighbor while embodying the essence of modern living.
The architectural ingenuity lies in its elevation strategy, gracefully lifting quiet living spaces above the bustling ground level, creating an ethereal sense of floating tranquility amidst the activity below.

Hillsborough BY received an 2025 American Architecture Honourable Mention from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.
Drawing from the classical design principles of the Carolands Chateau, the home harmoniously blends traditional elements with a contemporary air.
The service areas are cleverly nestled within a sturdy masonry plinth, reminiscent of the neighboring Chateau’s organizational ethos and its rustic foundation.

This strategic placement not only pays homage to the architectural heritage but also ensures a harmonious integration of functionality and aesthetics.
At the heart of the design concept lies the arrangement of spaces, where primary public areas are gathered within a double-height core.
This central nucleus serves as the nexus that seamlessly connects the interior with the exterior, inviting the lush surroundings and outdoor programs into the living experience.

With retractable doors dissolving the boundaries between inside and outside, the upper wooden-clad volumes metamorphose into a welcoming canopy, embracing the concept of indoor-outdoor living in its purest form.
The choice of materials plays a pivotal role in shaping the character of the abode, with wood emerging as the protagonist in the narrative of warmth and sophistication.
Adorning the exterior, the wood cladding not only adds visual appeal but also serves a functional purpose, moderating views, sunlight, and privacy.

Its rhythmic modulation around the structure creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, lending an ever-changing aura to the living spaces throughout the day.
Beyond its aesthetic allure, the design ethos of the home is deeply rooted in functionality and sustainability. Every element is meticulously curated to enhance the living experience while minimizing environmental impact.
From passive solar design principles that harness natural light and ventilation to the integration of energy-efficient technologies, every aspect is thoughtfully orchestrated to create a harmonious balance between luxury and eco-consciousness.
