Cappadocia, Turkey
Nestled in Cappadocia, the Goreme Open Air Museum project exemplifies the fusion of nature and human creativity, integrating modern architecture with the ancient landscape. Historically, humans used natural caves for shelter and protection, establishing a deep connection between architecture and nature. Cappadocia’s unique rupestrian habitat offers a rich cultural and geographical setting that inspires a renewed harmony between people and the environment.
Goreme Open Air Museum received an 2025 International Architecture Honourable Mention from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.
The project envisions transforming the existing UNESCO World Heritage open-air museum into a dynamic destination by introducing lightweight, unobtrusive buildings and enhancing visitor experiences. It will organize the landscape with walking paths, recreational zones, and interactive spaces that encourage exploration. A key goal is to improve accessibility by redesigning entrances and pathways with ramps and wider passages to accommodate all visitors, addressing current limitations of narrow entrances and steep stairs.
Sensitive to the region’s natural and cultural heritage, the design emphasizes non-invasive construction and the use of local materials. The architecture will incorporate innovative 3D-printed components—such as mud and concrete structures combined with glass and corten steel—in cone and waffle shapes to create climate-controlled and semi-open spaces. These prefabricated units will adapt to the terrain, blending with vegetation and topography, especially in café and retail areas.
Sustainability is central to the project, employing advanced production technologies to ensure low environmental impact, CO2 neutrality, and the preservation of Cappadocia’s scenic beauty. Overall, the Goreme Open Air Museum aims to create a meaningful, immersive experience that balances modern design with the timeless mysticism of its geological and cultural landscape.
