Los Angeles, California, USA
Without affecting the original historical fabric of the building, Gensler renovates the historic Herald Examiner building from its core bringing all its glory upfront and transforming it into a contemporary mixed-use structure.
Originally designed by Julia Morgan, architect to William Randolph Hearst, this historic building has stood in downtown Los Angeles since 1914 as the headquarters for the Herald Examiner newspaper and became a cultural monument in 1977.
Herald Examiner Building & ASU Build-Out has recently been awarded a 2023 American Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The building team executed the restoration, renovation, modernization, and seismic strengthening of the Herald Examiner Building core and shell to its former glory and repositioned it for mixed use.
Arizona State University leased 80% of the usable space for its global ASU Local initiative, which makes higher education more accessible and relevant for underserved students, especially people of color.
