With a unique series of flexible rooms designed based on a diverse pedagogical program, Fuller Middle School by Jonathan Levi of Jonathan Levi Architects has been completed for Framingham Public Schools.
Fuller Middle School provides students the flexible, expansive space to build upon the preparatory STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) education pedagogies Framingham students experience in elementary school.
A three-story Learning Commons, paired classroom suites with shared teacher planning offices to promote team teaching, and flexible indoor and outdoor gathering areas bring together the entire academic community, showcasing project-based learning and inspiring creativity and collaboration.
Fuller Middle School has recently been awarded a 2024 International Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
Forwarding the broader community’s goal of creating a new civic focus for South Framingham, the building is set back beyond a sloped outdoor amphitheater with a performance shell, serving as a gathering lawn for students and venue for town-wide events and performances.
The design features flexible & expansive spaces for a unique footprint and floorplan shaped by the various required functions.
Classrooms are combinable or separable and feature openable acoustic walls, teacher preparation areas, flexible ‘panoptic’ teaching corners, and mobile storage.
The school’s warm palette offers a humanized variations in material and scale and all classrooms are lit with ample daylight.
Simple materials are used in unusual ways and a sense of calm is achieved with a well-organized system for structures and materials.
A lofty media center is a place for lofty thinking and a maker space boasts flexible infrastructure for all kinds of creativity.
