Washington, D.C., USA
Located in northwest Washington DC, Elkus Manfredi Architects and landscape architects MYKD have designed a new 10-acre campus for pediatric research and clinical outpatient care revitalizing the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center buildings. ,
By incorporating an adaptive reuse of the original buildings, the design seamlessly integrates a series of roof terraces, plazas, and landscapes, fostering opportunities for community engagement and collaboration.

The project has been awarded an Honorable Mention at the 2023 American Architecture Awards from The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The military medical complex, renowned for being the destination where American presidents received medical treatment, was established in 1909 and comprises numerous buildings.

A master plan was developed for an auxiliary campus affiliated with Children’s National Hospital, renowned as one of the nation’s leading pediatric healthcare institutions.
In response to the hospital’s requirement for additional space for research and medical services, the campus was allocated the Walter Reed land by the US Congress, with the hospital’s main campus located nearby.
The historic brownfield site employs a human-centered design that focuses on research that demonstrates children’s improved health outcomes from engaging with natural environments.
