Flowering Moss Acoustic Collection is a unique sustainable acoustic textile, designed by Mary-Ann Williams, that is practically a moss-like material consisting of peony petal-shaped elements.
These petals remain in their form even though they have no internal structure, realized by a special hand-loom technique that employs an interlocking system, without gluing or stitching, which is easy to repair and adjust.
The project has been awarded a 2023 Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
This design is built up in a similar nature to the irregular foam structure of 1960s furniture by designers like Panton or Colombo, incorporating the benefits of milk foam that insulates the hot beverage beneath it. Therefore, sucking sounds like a sponge.
Flowering Moss makes it possible to create various perspectives, and types of surfaces beyond the limitations of the classic moss, branching between one-sided and double-face versions and between a full and partial surface.
All the while being easier to maintain than real moss and, due to its materiality, friendly to those with allergies. Available as wall panels, wall covers, ceiling panels, desk dividers, design screens, lamps, rugs, cushions, upholstery, furniture, baffles, living accessories, etc. In various heights, shapes, sizes, patterns, and over 40 colors.
It is handmade locally, in a solar-powered working environment, from natural, renewable, fully biodegradable woolfelt (OEKO-TEX®). A material which, with its astounding environmental friendliness mirrors moss’s insulating properties and natural ability to breathe in that absorbs and releases moisture from the air – reducing energy wasted by heating and air conditioning.
Beyond that wool is a natural absorbent of sound, airborne toxins and formaldehyde as well as an antibacterial agent; it is naturally flame-retardant, water- repellent and without any harmful substances.
