Hindmarsh Valley, South Australia, Australia
Cumulus Studio along with landscape architect Oxigen has designed five individual prefabricated pods, and contemporary additions to an existing stone-walled cottage each accommodation offering harnesses the picturesque views toward the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Ponderosa Hindmarsh Valley, the firm’s first major tourism project in South Australia, comprises luxury tourist accommodation where guests will be immersed in the natural surrounds.
“As our first major tourism project in SA, I feel that we’ve achieved something fairly ambitious for Ponderosa alongside our client,” says Cumulus Associate Architect and Project Lead, Jet O’Rourke.

“Instead of creating a uniform set of cabins, we designed each one pod as a different getaway experience for guests, offering a different way of connecting with their surroundings — the views, the flora and fauna — which you can do both from outside and inside of the pods.”
Set amongst stone outcrops and grazing pastures, each guest experience has been carefully designed to complement its unique setting.
Surface charred timbers (Shou Sugi Ban) are the predominant exterior cladding to link the collective.
The finely crafted interiors of each retreat include a king-size bed, kitchenette, and a luxurious bathroom promoting a sense of warmth and enclosure.
External baths and covered outdoor areas provide opportunities for guests to engage with the landscape.

High point is a sculpted shed perched on the northern point of the property, where guests will have the opportunity to interact with wandering sheep.
Eucalyptus tunnel takes inspiration from the local vegetation of Hindmarsh Valley, it’s angular form will make occupants feel contained in a jewelry box of stars.
In the round is a concrete pipe of dreams, hollowed out for rest and relaxation includes an outdoor serene bathing experience.
Hindmarsh Falls comprises two capsules precariously joined by a pavilion primed for outdoor adventure.

Split level cascades into the valley, its larger footprint allows for a daring escape for up to four guests.
The Cottage caters to larger groups and has been adapted to mimic the gabled roof forms of the original structure in a contemporary manner.
The dwelling comprises five bedrooms in addition to an all-weather outdoor room including a kitchen and fireplace perfect for entertaining.

A distinct lap pool sits parallel to the cottage and provides an infinity-edge view towards the rugged headland of the Bluff.
The landscaping designed by Oxigen reinforces the character of the site by utilizing local native vegetation and framing long views.
Dedicated walking trails promote a sense of unblinkered exploration.
Integrating rainwater harvesting, and solar collection the development is both environmentally resourceful and an example of local craftsmanship.
