Crafted by HK Timberbank, the Upcycled Wooden Bench is an innovative and sustainable piece designed to highlight the potential of reclaimed wood that not only serves as functional seating but also as an artistic statement, embodying the aesthetic and ecological benefits of upcycling.
For its eco-friendly design, the project has been awarded a 2024 Green Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
This bench is painstakingly made from a Chinese banyan tree “Ficus macrocarpa (Golden Leaf)” at the Gold Coast Hotel, which had fallen over due to strong winds and rain.
This banyan species is native to Hong Kong and is immediately recognizable by its dense, board foliage crown and the many bearded aerial roots that hang down from its branches.
Its broad canopy not only provides shade for people, but is also a valuable habitat for birds.
By taking a moment to relax on these benches, people can appreciate their origins in nature and support us in our mission to create a more sustainable future.
