The Cloud Bed brings this dream to life through a design inspired by the soft, serene beauty of the sky. Designed to create a calming and imaginative sleep environment, it offers children a soothing space where they can relax, dream, and feel as if they’re gently resting on clouds. With its soft, fluffy texture and minimalist, rounded form, the Cloud Bed provides both physical safety and an emotionally comforting atmosphere.
The Cloud Bed by Çilek Mobilya A.Ş., won a 2025 Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies.
Sleep plays a foundational role in children’s physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Yet many children face challenges when transitioning to sleep, often due to environmental and emotional factors. As such, designing an appropriate sleep environment is essential—not only to support rest, but to emotionally prepare the child for it.
Rooted in developmental research and poetic metaphor, the Cloud Bed offers a serene, sensory-rich environment that fosters emotional security and eases the child’s transition into sleep. The design draws on the “cloud” as a symbolic form, frequently associated in literature and developmental studies with peace, softness, and trust.
This metaphor is translated into a tangible experience: integrated LED lighting beneath the bed and transparent plexiglass legs give the bed a floating appearance, transforming the visual softness of a cloud into a physical illusion. The light system, controlled by a touch-sensitive sensor, gently illuminates the space throughout the night, enhancing the child’s sense of safety and calm.
Academic research underscores the role of mentally and emotionally relaxing elements in this transition. Sensory inputs—such as form, material, and ambient light—can significantly influence a child’s bedtime routine. Studies in child psychology reveal that calming imagery and soothing metaphors enhance emotional regulation and foster a sense of security. Among these, the cloud stands out as a recurrent figure in children’s narratives, often symbolizing gentleness and protection. Rounded lines and natural tones further contribute to mental and emotional relaxation.
The Cloud Bed was designed with these principles in mind—not only to fulfill functional needs, but to create a psychologically safe and aesthetically gentle environment. The headboard and main structure are unified into a clean, durable form. A USB Type-C charging port located into the headboard.
By creating a fairy-tale atmosphere that evokes softness, safety, and wonder, the Cloud Bed is designed to gently support children’s transition into sleep while nurturing their emotional wellbeing. It goes beyond meeting physical needs by addressing the psychological and aesthetic dimensions of bedtime.
Through its harmonious blend of form, material, lighting, and metaphor, the design offers a holistic experience that resonates with the emotional world of the child. In doing so, it provides a thoughtful perspective on the interdisciplinary connection between children’s furniture design and developmental psychology.
