Los Angeles, California, USA
Mathew Chaney of Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects (EYRC) with Cuningham Group Architecture and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio has created the Pendry West Hollywood Hotel and Residences, bringing a touch of 21st Century glamour and sophistication to Sunset Boulevard while connecting with the local community.
Over the course of the 20th century, Angelenos transformed a street once surrounded by avocado groves and poinsettia fields into a playground for Hollywood stars, a rock and roll mecca, and an urban canyon for cruising in the car and checking out the massive billboards on a Saturday night.
Sunset Boulevard became one of the most famous streets in the world.
The Pendry West Hollywood Hotel and Residences writes a new chapter in Sunset’s story, amplifying its heritage as a prime destination for nightlife, entertainment, dining, and shopping.
For its inspired design, the Pendry West Hollywood Hotel and Residences has recently been awarded a 2022 American Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

This vibrant mixed-use environment provides services and amenities for both visitors and the local community, satisfying the need for “density and intensity” in the 21st Century city.
Occupying the corner of Sunset and Olive, The Pendry complex is anchored by an 11-story modern hotel, complete with 149 guest rooms.
The hotel offers three dining venues, lounges, a private social club, bowling lanes, a screening room, a spa, a rooftop pool sanctuary with spectacular views of Los Angeles, and an intimate live music venue—an homage to its former House of Blues location.
The project also brings housing to the Strip.
Pendry Residences includes 40 luxury condominiums with private elevators, valet parking, concierge services, generous private terraces, city views, and distinctive common area features, as well as five affordable homes, a small retail footprint, and 400 subterranean parking spaces.

The project is registered with the certification goal of LEED Silver®.
Its prominent corner site presented the developer with an opportunity to embrace the Boulevard’s “see and be seen” spirit.
On the Hotel’s Sunset-facing façades, the architecture, signage, and branding merge into a 6,000 square-foot wall of high-definition LED “billboards,” where artists including David Hockney have produced commissioned digital artworks.
The site also demanded design solutions to complex challenges including a 69-foot vertical drop from Sunset Boulevard to Fountain Avenue.
Geotechnical considerations offered an opportunity to provide a clear separation between the hotel and residential uses with the creation of the piazza.

A visitor arriving by car is transported either into the immersive interior world of the Pendry Hotel—art, cuisine, music, respite, pleasure—or across the piazza into the residential enclave.
A sculptured, stainless steel tree with mother-of-pearl and crystal leaves at the hotel entrance shimmers and hints at the artful experience ahead.
From the piazza, the neighborhood-facing residential building portal frames a glimpse through the structure to the horizon beyond.
Taking advantage of the sloping site, the design steps gracefully down the steep incline, providing unparalleled views and vistas from the residences and their generous terraces.

A series of shared and private open spaces extend from the piazza between the residential masses to the various rooftops, creating outdoor living spaces that take in the city.
The Pendry brings a touch of 21st Century glamour and sophistication to West Hollywood while respecting and connecting with the community.
It honors and expands on the storied culture of Sunset Boulevard, helping to ensure its continued vitality.
