The 60-year-old iconic American brand Scotch-Brite along with the 3M Design team develops a new advanced multi-use scrubber, the new Scotch-Brite™ Advanced Scrub Dots Non-Scratch Scrubber that represents a leap forward in kitchen cleaning tools.
The project has been been awarded a 2020 Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
There is a widely held belief that scrub sponges get nasty over time.
3M team set out to solve this problem by starting from scratch on a new product concept.
The result is amazing and successfully meets the project objectives to be non-scratch, provide great cleaning, and be odor-resistant!
The team went to work developing concepts, building quick prototypes, and conducting multiple rounds of iterative, qualitative research with targeted consumers.
Through research, designers learned that food trapping and slow drying were critical areas to focus our efforts on solving.
The team also discovered that the ability to wring out the scrub sponge was very important, and that water absorption was not as important as previously thought.
Through collaboration and testing of 3M material technologies, we were able to develop the optimal materials for the product.
The product shape is based on extensive user testing and is ergonomically designed for use.
The gentle waveform on each edge gives a friendlier look to the hexagonal shape and coordinates well with the core product line.
In addition to the detailed product design, the product packaging needed to align and stand out in a retail environment.
Consumers like to be able to touch and feel the actual product before deciding to purchase it.
The design team and packaging engineers worked together to develop the final recycled/recyclable paperboard package with a large “touchable” opening and eye-catching graphics to draw in the shopper to learn more.
