Located on the east coast of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada, Pointe Au Baril boasts a freshwater landscape renowned for its ancient bedrock archipelagoes. Isolated from the mainland, Whistling Wind Island embraces the region’s harsh and hollowing winds, creating an ideal setting for the owner’s kite surfing passion.
The one-acre site is comprised of four gabled structures – a main cottage, bunkie, sauna and boat storage – which appear as though tossed into place by the wind. Each is interconnected by wooden gangways leading to boat landings and feature expansive decks that extend over the terrain.
Interiors feature contemporary whitewashed boards throughout and ceilings that interpret traditional truss construction. The architecture prioritizes sustainability through passive heating and cooling, supplemented by fireplaces that negate the need for mechanical systems.
Its design seamlessly integrates with the wild beauty of Pointe Au Baril while providing a safe and cozy haven from which to experience the remarkable power of nature.
