The World’s Most Transformative Buildings and Urban Planning Projects from over 50 Nations Take Center Stage during the 2026 International Architecture Awards at the Main Global Event ‘The City and The World’ at the Foot of Acropolis in Athens, Greece this September 18-19

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in conjunction with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies have announced the winners of the 2026 International Architecture Awards® in the oldest, largest, and most extensive awards program for new Global Architecture.

Established in 2005, the International Architecture Awards are the highest global accolade awarded to buildings and urban planning and landscape architecture projects that demonstrate visionary design thinking, originality, excellence of execution, thereby making a distinct contribution to the general public, and users, the surrounding environment, and urban communities.

This annual program, organized by both architecture institutions, also promotes international architecture and design to our worldwide public audience and is supported by the new online magazine Global Design News.

From a shortlist of 850 projects, over 300 remarkable new buildings, landscape architecture, and urban planning projects were selected by this year’s distinguished jury to celebrate outstanding architecture in over 50 countries that tackle global challenges, including climate change, limited resources, green design, preservation, social equity, and rapid urban growth.

The winning projects from five continents range from net-zero industrial hubs, bold skyscrapers, airports, museums, social housing, cultural centers, and libraries to new urban plans, bridges, infrastructure, and Third World art and community centers.

“For The International Architecture Awards for 2026,” continues Mr. Narkiewicz-Laine, “architects have reimagined bridges and infrastructure with a sense of dynamism to provide a fluid, durable, and human-scale pedestrian and cyclist connection with such winning projects as the Wonder Bridge in Lost Hills, California by SPF:architects, Passerelle Zwolle in Overijssel, The Netherlands by Karres en Brands BV., and the Light(Car)House in Seoul, South Korea by Sung et Associés architecture.

“Likewise, winning cultural and civic buildings have been designed as places of openness, renewal and shared identity. In Beijing and Dubai, the Capital International Exhibition and Convention Centre by Patrik Schumacher/Zaha Hadid Architects and Ghaf Woods Experience Centre by aoe redefine the civic landmark for the digital age, while in Cyprus, the Troodos Observatory by Kyriakos Tsolakis Architects is designed to inspire, enthuse, and educate the public about the wonders of the universe. In Germany, the Brühl City Hall and Municipal Library by JSWD Architekten GmbH & Co. KG features staggered, gabled volumes clad in light-colored clinker brick to match the traditional local scale, while in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, the Kamal Theater by Kengo Kuma and Associates and Wowhaus features triangular aluminum and glass panels arranged like ice petals that reflect the surrounding lake, sky, and forest,” Mr. Narkiewicz-Laine explains.

“Other projects demonstrate how high-rise and skyscraper environments can respond to environmental challenges, social complexity, and rapid urban change. Forbes International Tower in Cairo, Egypt, by Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill LLP. (AS+GG) is a net-zero carbon commercial skyscraper that utilizes rows of solar panels on the roof and along the building’s façade designed to leverage nature to power itself, and Al Sa’Ad Plaza Towers in Doha, Qatar, by Foster + Partners consists of four high-rise office towers arranged symmetrically around a grand central public plaza as a striking, climate-responsive architectural centerpiece for the city’s new central business district.”

“The majority of awarded projects incorporate adaptive reuse features strongly, while community-led projects further demonstrate architecture’s social role. Other winning projects rework traditional forms and materials that support hospitality, social ties, and local economic opportunity,” states Mr. Narkiewicz-Laine.

This elite group of buildings and urban planning projects selected by the jury will be premiered in an exhibition at the newly renovated The European Centre (74 Mitropoleos Str., GR-105 63 Athens, Greece) September 18 and continuing through October 18, 2025.

The exhibition is entitled The City and the World with the reception scheduled for Friday, September 18 together with a Symposium of distinguished speakers on Saturday, September 19.

The official Awards Presentation takes place at a Gala Awards Dinner and Ceremony adjacent to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece on September 18.
