Dieter Blok is an architect who creates buildings that deeply connect with and enhance their landscapes. With nearly two decades of experience leading his own firm and collaborating with skilled partners, he combines technical precision with conceptual depth to deliver unique, site-specific designs. Dieter’s approach prioritizes listening to clients and the environment alike, resulting in architecture that feels natural, thoughtful, and beautifully crafted. Dieter Blok, together with his colleague Sanne Eekel, have won an international architecture award for 2025 for their work on the Houberg Estate.

GDN: Can you please share some key qualities of the project, please?
Dieter Blok: The first time we arrived at the location, it appeared abandoned and dismantled, creating a sense of tension. We recognized the potential of the very beautiful landscape, and we wanted to intervene sensibly. We are thinking we have to create architecture that can also bring back the inherent quality of the landscape in this location. We are really looking at the architecture, how we can integrate it into the landscape. The project was executed in a special way. There are different types of landscapes, and the building has three district wings, each one embracing a different type of landscape. The design harmoniously unites within the house itself and the surrounding garden walls, which also really anchor the building to the landscape. As a result, the structure now appears as though it has always been an integral part of its natural surroundings. The design offers expansive views from the interior to the exterior, showcasing the diverse and beautiful surrounding landscapes. In certain areas, a truly panoramic view is offered, while in others, the vistas are intentionally framed to highlight specific elements such as a church, the fields, or other distinctive features. The spatial experience is expansive and varied, and as one looks outward, the constantly changing views create a sense of adventure and discovery.

GDN: What sets your architectural film apart from others in terms of design philosophy?
Dieter Blok: I start with the landscape, as it represents a significant distinction in our approach. My intention is to create architecture that enhances the landscape, rather than merely placing a structure within it. This involves an attentive study of the landscape—listening to its qualities and responding thoughtfully—so that the architecture strengthens and elevates the entire environment.
GDN: How receiving the award impacted your professional approach?
Dieter Blok: When presenting this project, I recognize that it resonates deeply with people. This outcome is the result of close collaboration with the client and landscape architects, as well as a solid and intensive partnership with the builders. Together, these collective efforts have led to exceptional developments within the project.

GDN: How do you envision the future of architecture in relation to urban development and technology?
Dieter Blok: I believe the approach should be more integrated. Currently, there is a tendency toward increasing specialization; however, I consider that this is not a desirable direction. Instead, encouraging greater integration would lead to more cohesive and effective outcomes.
