This Is Not a Chair is a project that reinterprets the pipe depicted in René Magritte’s iconic painting The Treachery of Images (This Is Not a Pipe) as a functional chair.
While Magritte’s painting highlights the distinction between an image and the object it represents, Yun extends this discourse by exploring the relationship between image and function.
The project began with an investigation into what defines a chair as a chair. We generally recognize a chair through its form, yet we also understand it through its function—the ability to be sat on.

This Is Not a Chair is designed as a chair, but its form does not correspond to the conventional image of a chair.
By retaining the shape of a pipe while performing the function of a chair, the work questions whether form or function determines the identity of an object.

Rather than providing a definitive answer, the project proposes a new perspective on how we define objects.
It suggests that a chair is not determined solely by its appearance or its function, but is instead constructed through the interplay of form, function, and our interpretation of them.
In the end, This Is Not a Chair does not seek to overturn Magritte’s proposition, but to reexamine it through the language of contemporary design
The project began with the transformation of René Magritte’s image into a three-dimensional object.

To achieve this, the form was first developed through 3D modeling. A standard chair seat height of 45 cm was used as the primary reference, and the remaining dimensions were designed according to the proportions and visual balance of Magritte’s original image.
Once the digital model was finalized, the form was hand-carved from styrofoam and reinforced with layers of paper pulp.
This process allowed the object to maintain its sculptural qualities while functioning as a usable chair.
Finally, the piece was finished with acrylic paint and varnish to recreate the visual characteristics of Magritte’s pipe.
