Shanghai United Design Group designed the first WOWDSGN Shanghai MixC Store where extraordinary daily designs and the pursuit of premium quality of life are being promoted via the customers’ subtle perceptions and memory.
The design of theWOWDSGN MixC store has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Awards Honorable Mention by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
WOWDSGN is a Nordic collection brand for home furnishing, aiming at presenting extraordinary daily designs and pursuing a premium quality of life.
The WOWDSGN Shanghai MixC Store (WOWDSGN MixC) is the first of the brand’s offline furniture stores.
It projects customers’ impressions of daily life on the interior to recall customers’ subtle perceptions and memory.
The designer’s idea applied a series of natural forms, presenting the idea of a “return to nature,” which coincides with Nordic furniture as well.
“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, directed by Sergio Leone in 1966, served as the inspiration for the design of WOWDSGN MixC.
The multiple vaults divided the space into several scenes, acting as scenography containing daily furniture and everyday life.
When it comes to WOWDSGN MixC, the vaults offer independent bays which become a series of scenes.
The vaults reveal their spatial tension rather than structural and mechanical properties.
In this case, the designers took the authority of geometric form and transformed it.
The curved arch not only obtains spatial tension but also converges dramatic scenography through different directions.
In addition, the material of the vault is inspired by Alvar Aalto’s bending woods.
The cherry veneer coated with varnish was applied to the vaults.
The whole interior is divided into three parts: the front hall serves as a small accessories display area; the central hall presents the daily scenes such as the dining room and living room; the back hall has a bedroom scene.
The designers wanted to create a private daily living place within a public shopping mall, offering guests the immersion of an at-home experience.
