México City, DF., México
Josè Bruguera of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners has led the transformation of one of Mexico’s leading institutions of higher learning, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in Mèxico City, doubling the footprint of the existing campus and establishes an iconic identity for ITAM on the skyline as well as at ground level.

ITAM Campus has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Awards Honorable Mention by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The concept looks to the future while respecting history.
By linking the old campus to the new through a series of interconnected public spaces, the plan creates an open, sustainable, and stimulating environment for education.
Comprising 82,000 square meters at the edge of Mexico City’s historic San Ángel neighborhood, the reimagined campus engages the surrounding community with a variety of multipurpose facilities, public plazas, and pathways through the site.

In addition to classrooms, faculty offices, and dormitories, the plan calls for a new student union, expanded library, and administration building, as well as dining with outdoor terraces and an open-air amphitheater atop a tiered-seating auditorium.
These attractive features, framed by a vibrant landscape design, will serve as a crucial link between the new campus and the old, joining ITAM’s past and future in a tangible way.
With a variety of forms reflecting their diverse functions, the new buildings are united by a shared material palette, geometry, and scale.
The notable exception is the 28-story glass-clad Torre ITAM, whose floor plan starts as two rotated squares at the base and transforms as the building rises to become a single square at the crown.
Situated at the northernmost corner of the campus, the tower will house ITAM’s executive training program on the lower floors and a sky garden at the top for special events.
The new campus will boldly affirm, through architecture, ITAM’s role at the forefront of business education in Latin America.
