Designed by Mario Bellini and manufactured by B&B Italia, the new Camaleonda Sofa offers the luxury of changing your mind as many times as you desire, moving and redesigning the space.
The Camaleonda Sofa’s project recently won a 2022 Green Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
Presented to the public in 1970, Camaleonda has passed through 5 decades of design history as a true icon.
Back in production in 2020 after a careful design process that involved the close collaboration between the designer and B&B Italia’s Research and Development Centre, in its reissue, this modular sofa preserves the elements that have made it a contemporary classic.
The generous polyurethane padding that forms the characteristic capitonné design remains unchanged, still manufactured with the innovative system of cables, hooks, and rings created by Bellini in 1970, which defines the characteristic look and modularity.
The re-edition of the Camaleonda does not however look back to the past but aims to rewrite an indisputable classic from a contemporary perspective.
Aesthetics, dimensions, proportions, and the way it is configured remain unchanged, while the composition of the interior has been completely redesigned paying great attention to sustainability and circularity issues.
Camaleonda has now a “sandwich” structure made up of recycled or recyclable materials that can be easily disassembled.
The seat, backrest, and armrests bases are made of wooden panels, while their padding is made of polyurethane in various levels of density and firmness.
In the seat, the various layers are shaped and assembled to allow them to interact guaranteeing a high level of comfort.
The various layers generate empty spaces or pockets designed to create a comfortable spring effect.
The padding is protected by a removable cover made of 100% recycled Polyester Fiber, a synthetic fabric that is entirely made of recycled PET, the same material used to manufacture plastic water bottles.
The sofa rests on the floor on a series of spherical feet made of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council – License Code FSC-C142045) certified beech wood.
The engineering and composition of the seat allow all Camaleonda components to be completely disassembled.
Therefore, at the end of the product life cycle, they can be easily recycled or disposed of following the path best suited to each material.
